What People are Saying About Us

Brian

Brian Switalla

I came to see you in mid 2000. That year thanks to your help I won the NZ Solo Piping Championships again (a goal I had been struggling to achieve over prior years), and did so again in 2002. I also was a part of the 2003 World Championship winning Pipe Band, but all that detail is in the bio.

How you helped me was to appreciate that being in the "Zone" was often enough to achieve the goals you are after, as long as you set your standards high.

You taught me, not to worry if things weren't entirely perfect, as if I had prepared well enough, these small things would not stop me achieving.

You taught me to form a "force field" around myself when I was competing, that kept out all negative thoughts and anxiety.

You helped me enjoy my music a lot more.

For all these things I am grateful.

Brian was born in Dunedin but now resides in Christchurch. Brian commenced his piping at age 11, originally being taught by Fergus Mathieson of Dunedin. He has also received tuition from Allan Dodd, Lewis Turrell and Donald Bain, who all have had major influences on his piping career.

In 2000 the opportunity to play with the Field Marshal Montgomery Pipe Band, from Northern Ireland arose. Brian played with the Band in 2000, 2002 (when they won the World Championships) and 2003.

Study Coach™

Jonathan Duncan utilized a study coach for two years. He passed all of his bursary exams while training extremely hard to achieve these goals. During this time he was able to improve nationally from being 4th in one event to winning Senior Men's titles in all his events. He is joined the NZ Elite squad and qualified for the Olympics.

Positive thought spurs Duncan

Jonathan Duncan

By Alistair McMurran

Dunedin Olympian Jonathon Duncan spends an hour each day developing a positive metal approach. It has transformed his swimming.

He has worked with motivator Rakesh Pandey for the last 12 months and it has paid dividends. Duncan (18) has always had the physical attributes and strength to become an international swimmer, but Pandey has taught hum to give direction to his powers.

Duncan started the season as a "long shot" for the New Zealand Olympic team with his best 400m freestyle time of 4min 03sec.

But he reduced this by a remarkable eight seconds when he qualified for the Sydney Olympics with a time of 3min 55.74sec at the Australian age group championships at Perth in April.

At the New Zealand championships at Auckland in March, he won four men's open freestyle titles - 200m, 400m, 800m and 1500m - and narrowly missed the games qualifying standard in the 400m.

James Skeggs
Before coming to Big Picture Learning I had low marks. I wasn’t organised or confident. The Study Coach got me organised, taught me some valuable study skills and showed me ways to relate better to my work. This resulted in much higher marks.

Anthony Lee
The Study Coach really helped me study. The content he gave me provided me with not only understanding, but also insight in how to answer questions properly in exams.

I Learnt more maths in three weeks here, than I’ve learnt in three years at school. Better yet, I now know what I want in life is possible.
